What is National Portfolio Day?

Portfolioday

National Portfolio Day is an event specifically for visual artists and designers. It is an opportunity for those who wish to pursue an education in the visual and related arts to meet with representatives from colleges accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.  Representatives will be available to review your artwork, discuss their programs and answer questions about professional careers in art.  High school students, parents, teachers, guidance counselors and college transfer students are encouraged to attend.

National Portfolio Day serves a variety of purposes.  Most importantly, it is designed to help further the artistic development of young artists by bringing together experienced college representatives to review artwork and offer feedback.  We understand that some people make certain kinds of art more successfully than others.  Don't be discouraged if you see work that is "better" than yours.  A National Portfolio Day may be the first time you have seen so many people in one place who all share a powerful commitment to the arts.  The experience is a small taste of what a professional art program can be like.

National Portfolio Days are also about the exchange of information about your work, yourself, your college plans, and your concerns.  This is not an examination or competition.  The college representatives are pleased to talk about their programs with you and can be most helpful when discussing your artwork.  Your portfolio should include your best and most recent work, but it can also include works in progress, sketchbooks and tear sheets.  You'll hear many different opinions of your work.  Don't hesitate to explain how you develop your ideas and where you want to go with them.  No admissions decisions or scholarship awards will be offered to you at National Portfolio Day.  Some colleges represented may accept your portfolio as the visual portion of your application.  Other colleges have restrictions that prohibit them from making a definite portfolio decision at the time of your review.  We urge you to discuss your work with as many representatives as possible.

What should I bring?

Your portfolio can include finished pieces, work in progress, and sketchbooks. We ask you to bring your original artwork whenever possible. We suggest that you do not spend time and money matting or framing your work. Keep your presentation simple; the work itself is what is of interest to us.

How do I choose an Art College?

Art making is a special kind of learning experience. Of particular concern to art students should be a college's faculty, facilities, and equipment. You should also consider the school's proximity to museums, galleries, and other cultural resources, in addition to its academic standards, extracurricular activities, housing, costs, and financial aid offerings. We urge you to gather enough information so that you may choose a supportive and stimulating art college environment that meets your individual needs. Try your best to visit the colleges that interest you, to get a feel for each school before you make your final decision. Investigate the colleges' accreditations and the transferability of their credits, and be sure you understand each school's degree offerings and majors.

It's due when? The FAST pace of AP Art.

How to Survive AP Studio Art

Listen well. It's not from our school, but AP Studio Art requires the same portfolio from everyone, everywhere. (AP II is similar to our Varsity)

12 Breadth (assignments) + 12 Concentration (your series) = 24 pieces of art!

Picture_1

You will submit your completed portfolio in early May, but it will have to be complete by early April so you can crop, resize and edit your images before you upload them to the AP website.

You'll also select the best 5 from all 24 to put in the mail by the deadline in early May. This is your Quality section and these pieces will need to be spray fixed, mounted on cardboard and a cover sheet will be attached to protect it during shipping.

This is a lot of work and we're on a tight schedule since we start school much later in the fall than most other schools in other states. Therefore, you'll need to create about one piece every 2 weeks. However, you'll always work on 2 pieces at the same time so we can stagger the due dates and only have one due each week.  It sounds confusing, but you'll get the hang of it quickly! Here's the calendar with the due dates, critques & check-in's.

This fast pace may sound scary since you're used to having unlimited time on projects, but please trust me here, you get used to it by about the 3rd assignment. You get good at being fast when you stop thinking that every piece is precious. You'll make more, lots more!!! Don't be afraid to screw it up, but please DON'T START OVER! Put in the hours needed to create and leave yourself enough time to FIX what needs fixing, but don't...start...over...SERIOUSLY.

Heed these words of wisdom from Mt. Eden's own "Varsity" AP Students:

About the images on this site

While the vast majority of images on this site are from my own AP Studio Art students, I have also included some art from master artists, a few images from AP Central, the College Board webiste, as well as images from other AP students from Deviant Art. I wish I could credit the individual artists for each image, but it's not possible on this blog.

Also, I've mostly used art from my recent classes as their art is already digital. However, eventually I'll get all my slides scanned and add the artwork from years past soon!
